Early Signs Your Child May Need Orthodontics
We are often asked, “How do I know if my child will need braces when they are older?” That’s a great question! Even though the jaw and teeth are still developing in younger children, there are signs that we can spot that will tell us whether orthodontic treatments might be in their future. Read on to find out more.
An orthodontic consultation should be done no later than age 7 or 8, as orthodontic treatments usually begin between the ages of 9 and 14, when permanent teeth are still growing and developing.
While most orthodontic problems are inherited, they can also develop due to the use of pacifiers, thumb or finger sucking, and poor dental hygiene or nutrition, which is the main reason why some children as young as eight years old may need orthodontic treatments.
Early Signs Your Child May Need Orthodontics
Teeth misalignments, crowded and crooked teeth, and other misalignment problems can develop due to:
- Loss of baby teeth wither too early or too late
- Abnormal chewing or biting
- Mouth breathing
- Finger or thumb sucking
- Crowded, misplaced, or impacted teeth
- Jaw that either juts out or is recessed
- Prolonged use of a bottle or pacifier
The Solution
Braces correct these alignment problems by adding pressure to move the teeth into a straight position. The most common type of braces are the classic brackets with wires and rubber bands, but new alternatives, like clear or lingual braces, which are much less noticeable, can also be effective. This depends on each patient’s situation.
