Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide has been the primary means of sedation in dentistry for many years. It is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating, colorless gas which you can breathe. It is also safe, and the patient receives 50-70% oxygen with no less than 30% nitrous oxide.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous Oxide has been the primary means of sedation in dentistry for many years. It is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating, colorless gas which you can breathe. It is also safe, and the patient receives 50-70% oxygen with no less than 30% nitrous oxide.

While under nitrous oxide, the patient is able to breathe on their own and remain in control of all bodily functions. The patient may experience mild amnesia, or even fall asleep, and have no memory of what happened during their appointment.

There are many advantages to using Nitrous Oxide which include:

  • The sedation level can be altered at any time to increase or decrease sedation.
  • There are no after effects, such as a “hangover”.
  • Inhalation sedation is safe with no side effects to your health (heart and lungs, etc.)
  • Inhalation sedation is very effective at minimizing gagging.
  • It works rapidly. The gas reaches the brain within 20 seconds and in as little as 2-3 minutes you will be relaxed and feel no pain.

Reasons to not use Nitrous Oxide

Those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) should not use nitrous oxide. While there are no other major contraindications to using nitrous oxide, you may want to avoid using it if you have emphysema, exotic chest problems, M.S., a cold or other difficulties with breathing.
It is possible to have a “5 minute trial” of the gas so you can see how you feel under this type of sedation method before moving forward with your procedure.

What do our patients have to say?

As much as I dislike going to the dentist because I don’t like shots Dr. Klasinski administered multiple shots for numbing purposes in my last couple of appointments with absolutely no pain. The staff is very outgoing and friendly. I highly recommend Kewaskum Family Dentist.

Been going to Kewaskum Family Dentistry for 40 years. Congrats to Dr. Dennis Connor on retirement. The transition to seeing Dr. Sara Klasinski has been seamless. The staff is still great. Dr. Klasinski I feel is very good. The procedures are as comfortable as can be and basicly painless. The cleanings have been great and my recent crown procedure went great also. No discomfort after the procedure.

From the Virtual consultation to the in office visit, everything was great! Dr. K was lovely and explained everything to my son and I in a way we could understand. The staff at the front desk were professional, helpful and friendly. I am very happy I chose this practice for my children's dental needs.
