Nitrous Oxide has been the primary means of sedation in dentistry for many years. It is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating, colorless gas which you can breathe. It is also safe, and the patient receives 50-70% oxygen with no less than 30% nitrous oxide.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous Oxide has been the primary means of sedation in dentistry for many years. It is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating, colorless gas which you can breathe. It is also safe, and the patient receives 50-70% oxygen with no less than 30% nitrous oxide.
While under nitrous oxide, the patient is able to breathe on their own and remain in control of all bodily functions. The patient may experience mild amnesia, or even fall asleep, and have no memory of what happened during their appointment.
There are many advantages to using Nitrous Oxide which include:
- The sedation level can be altered at any time to increase or decrease sedation.
- There are no after effects, such as a “hangover”.
- Inhalation sedation is safe with no side effects to your health (heart and lungs, etc.)
- Inhalation sedation is very effective at minimizing gagging.
- It works rapidly. The gas reaches the brain within 20 seconds and in as little as 2-3 minutes you will be relaxed and feel no pain.
Reasons to not use Nitrous Oxide
Those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) should not use nitrous oxide. While there are no other major contraindications to using nitrous oxide, you may want to avoid using it if you have emphysema, exotic chest problems, M.S., a cold or other difficulties with breathing.
It is possible to have a “5 minute trial” of the gas so you can see how you feel under this type of sedation method before moving forward with your procedure.
