Damaged or Malfunctioning Braces
If a bracket or band comes loose or you break a wire, please call our office so that we can arrange an appointment to have it repaired. Please try and explain what has happened and be as specific as possible with the receptionist. If you lose your rubber bands, we can mail you some more or drop by the office and pick them up.
Sore Teeth
It is normal for the teeth to be sore for about 2 or 3 days after the placement of braces. Use Tylenol or Advil to help relieve this discomfort. Some irritation to the cheeks and tongue is also normal, however, if you feel anything sharp poking you or sores start to develop, please call our office.
Elastics
Elastics (rubber bands) are attached to your braces to exert the proper force which in turn creates the right amount of pressure to move teeth. For this force to remain constant, elastics must be worn at all times and changed out every day. Not wearing your elastics will only make your treatment longer. Please remember the following:
- It’s your responsibility to place the elastics on your braces between appointments. Please wear them as instructed. You should only remove them when brushing your teeth, gums and braces after meals. Place them back on immediately.
- Always carry a few elastics with you. If one breaks you can replace it right away. Call the office and we will mail you an additional supply of elastics if your supply is low.
- If you forget to insert your elastics one day, don’t double up the next day. Continue on with regular instructions.
- Elastics will get worn out. Once they lose their elasticity, they will not provide the proper pressure on your teeth and jaws. That’s why it is very important to change them as directed, even when they are not broken.
If your elastics break frequently, a wire or band loosens, or a hook breaks off please call our office immediately. Don’t wait until your next appointment because these problems need to be corrected as soon as possible.
