Tips To Help Teeth This Halloween
It’s hard to believe that Halloween is here! We know that many of our patients are enjoying parties and activities to celebrate this special holiday. We would hate for your choices to negatively affect your oral health. We have three tips to help you enjoy some sweet treats this Halloween while also keeping your oral health in mind:
Choose Chocolate
We know that our patients are going to indulge in some sweet treats during this time of year. It is best to choose chocolate and avoid chewy and sticky candy. Chocolate melts in your mouth and doesn’t stick to your teeth. Chewy candy options will linger on your teeth, increasing your risk of developing tooth decay and needing dental treatment.
Drink Plenty of Water
After you eat candy, it is important to drink water to help rinse your mouth. Drinking water is helpful not only for your overall health but for your oral health as well. Water helps to rid the mouth of remaining food and bacteria after eating. Water is also a great option to drink with meals.
Eat Candy with Meals
Every time you eat, bacteria are introduced into your mouth. If you are going to eat candy, it is best to enjoy it after a meal when there is already an overabundance of bacteria. If you eat candy between meals, you will be introducing new bacteria at another time. When you choose to eat candy and sweet treats with meals, the saliva production is already enhanced and can help rid your mouth of most of the harmful bacteria.
Halloween is a time when we are mindful of the sugar on our teeth, but it is also a great reminder that teeth need to be properly cared for year round. Now is a great time to review the proper way to brush at least twice a day and floss daily. Along with these tips, we always recommend staying on top of your regular dental cleanings. Please call us at our office, which is located in Kewaskum, WI, if you have any questions or to schedule your next cleaning. We will be happy to help! Happy Halloween!
