Follow After-Treatment Directions
At Kewaskum Family Dentistry, we want our patients to have successful dental treatments. When we recommend a dental treatment, we stress the importance of scheduling your treatment in a timely manner to help prevent decay from progressing further. When you arrive for treatment, we will explain what to expect during treatment and will give specific recovery directions. Procedures such as dental fillings will not have as detailed instructions as patients who are receiving dental implants or a root canal. No matter if you are visiting us for a filling or an implant, it is important to follow our after treatment directions.
Importance of Following Instructions
We see a number of patients daily who receive a variety of dental treatments and each patient will have a different recovery. No matter how you are feeling after treatment, it is important to follow our directions. Failure to follow instructions can lead to unnecessary discomfort, failure of treatment, and the need to repeat the procedure, adding to your expenses.
One piece of advice we offer to each patient is to avoid eating and drinking until your mouth is no longer numb. Chewing while numb can be very dangerous because you increase your risk of biting on your cheek, tongue and lip. Biting these areas in the mouth can cause sores in the mouth to develop. Drinking while numb can be difficult and can make a mess. It may be difficult to hold the liquid properly in your mouth. We also recommend avoiding chewing on the side of treatment until it feels comfortable to you, unless we advise otherwise. For example, patients who received a tooth extraction or have started the process for dental implants may need to chew on the opposite side for a longer time period.
