Extra Protection In The Fight Against Cavities
Do you find that you frequently have food stuck in your teeth, even after brushing? Or maybe this happens to someone you are close to. It is not uncommon for a number of patients, especially children, to have food remaining in the deep grooves of the back molars after brushing. This leads to lingering bacteria and becomes a breeding ground for tooth decay, eventually resulting in cavities. Children are especially susceptible to this due to their habit of frequent snacking. We offer a treatment solution that can aid in the prevention of cavities on the back molars. Continue reading to learn more.
What are Dental Sealants?
We know that brushing, flossing, and proper oral hygiene are the best ways to keep cavities away. Unfortunately, deep set molars in the back of the mouth can be extremely difficult to keep clear of food, even after brushing. Children have a particularly difficult time brushing the rear molars and removing food that may have been left behind. In these cases, we recommend the use of dental sealants. A dental sealant is a clear coating that is painted on the rear molars with particular attention to the deep grooves and lines on the biting surface. These sealants act like a protective shield helping to fend off decay and inhibit the development of cavities.
Who Can Benefit From Dental Sealants?
Many patients think that dental sealants are only for children, and that is simply not true. While it is more common for children to receive sealants during our care, we do recommend sealants to adults as well. Dental sealants are particularly helpful to adults who have never had any fillings or cavities in their teeth. It is an extra level of protection to keep teeth healthy. We recommend sealants to children who have their permanent molars and premolars. At times, we also suggest using sealants on baby teeth that have extremely deep grooves and are more prone to decay.
